The house “Los Quejigales” is situated in privileged and unique surroundings. It is located in the municipal territory of Ronda, at 1300 m altitude and in the very heart of the Natural Park Sierra de las Nieves, just beside the recreational area with the same name, which offers as well a huge public BBQ facility. The house offers an easy access by a dirt track in good conditions, which starts directly at the national road A397 Ronda – San Pedro de Alcántara and which will guide you over 10 km and in around 20 minutes through beautiful and mountainous landscapes directly to the house. Only a few metres from the house start several hiking and trekking routes of different levels – among others the route called “Hiking route Quejigales – Torrecillas”, which will give you a general idea of the Natural Park as it guides you through different zones, which represent most of the different habitats of the area. At the beginning of the route you will discover in the “pinsapar” (a forest of pinsapo trees) some samples pinsapo trees with several hundred years of age, before you will move up to the “Quejigales” (forests of Quejigo trees – the so called Portuguese Oak, native to the western Mediterranean region in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands). The latter ones are growing on the high summits of the mountain range. Both species are emblematic for the region. The route finishes on the highest peak of the province of Malaga – the Torrecilla (1.919m). You will find more information about the pinsapo trees and the Portuguese mountain oaks in our section “Surroundings”. Near to the above mentioned route is the cave GESM with more than 1100 m depth, which is considered one of the most important caves of Andalusia. Until now only part of the cave could be investigated but it is expected to find a connection with other caves nearby, which would convert it in one of the longest and most important caves of whole Europe. The house “Los Quejigales” is situated at the very edge of areas with protection level A – i.e. the highest possible protection in a Natural Park. In times with heavy snowfalls and during the periods with the highest risk of forest fires (15th June until 15th October) the entrance to the Natural Park is limited for vehicles. Only persons authorized by the Ministry of Environment and the guests of the rural house “Cortijo de Los Quejigales” have access by car.
